Clare's Cool Crystals of the Week — 28 September

It's Spooky Season on the way!! All the cute wee carvings have landed — nearly everything that came in has a face and a story of its own — and on top of that we've had a gorgeous delivery of genuine moldavite, including some of the biggest pendants we've ever had in. Narrowing it down to ten was a proper struggle this time; these are simply the ones I kept picking back up.

1. White Jade Ghost with Balloon on Yooperlite Base
Why I love it: A tiny white jade ghost clutching a cat's eye balloon, standing on a chunk of yooperlite — and you pick the balloon colour from light blue, green, red, purple or black. Here's the clever bit: yooperlite glows bright orange under UV light, so the base lights up in the dark. It was only identified in 2017 on the shores of Lake Superior in Michigan, and that glow comes from fluorescent sodalite.

2. Black Obsidian Skull with Bat Carving
Why I love it: A glossy jet-black skull with a wee bat perched on top, and the bat has glowing red eyes — very gothic, very fun. Obsidian is natural volcanic glass, formed when lava cools so quickly that crystals never get the chance to grow, which is exactly why it takes such a mirror polish. This one photographs beautifully.

3. Strawberry Aventurine Hanging Bat Carving
Why I love it: An upside-down bat on a cord, carved in that soft strawberry pink, so you can hang it in a window and let the light come through it. The sparkle you can see comes from tiny reflective mineral flakes caught inside the quartz. In folklore the bat is a symbol of rebirth and transition — a lovely thing to have swinging by the window this time of year.

4. Cats in Witch's Hats
Why I love it: A wee sitting cat wearing a pointy witch's hat, and I couldn't pick a favourite stone, so here they all are. The rose quartz one is soft and pink, the obsidian is glossy jet black, the strawberry aventurine sparkles, the green aventurine is a proper cat's-eye green and the green fluorite has bands running through it. They're the same carving in five very different stones, so you can see how much the material changes the personality.
£24.99 each — rose quartz, obsidian, strawberry aventurine, green aventurine, green fluorite
5. Orange Calcite Pumpkin with Eyes
Why I love it: Glowing orange calcite carved into a plump wee pumpkin, with cat's eye style eyes that shift as you turn it in the light — and you choose the eye colour from blue, purple, orange, green or yellow. Calcite is one of the most common minerals on Earth and soft enough to scratch with a knife, which is partly why it carves so cleanly. Cute and spooky in equal measure.

6. Silver Sheen Obsidian Ghost Carving
Why I love it: A classic sheet ghost, and when you tilt it the whole surface shimmers silver. That sheen comes from tiny gas bubbles and inclusions that lined up in the volcanic glass as it flowed. Simple shape, but it's a proper statement piece on a shelf.

7. Giant Moldavite Pendant — our biggest
Why I love it: This is the one everyone picks up first. A big, mossy-green piece of genuine moldavite in a simple sterling silver setting, with that unmistakable wrinkled, etched surface you only get on the real thing. Moldavite is a natural glass thrown out when a meteorite struck what's now southern Germany around 15 million years ago, and it only falls in one part of the world — Bohemia, in the Czech Republic. Pieces this size are getting harder and harder to come by as the digs close.

8. Large Moldavite Pendant
Why I love it: Another big one, and a lovely shape — hold it up to the window and the green really comes alive, because moldavite is transparent glass rather than a crystal. Every single piece is different, so it's worth comparing a few before you choose.

9. Moldavite Pendant
Why I love it: A slightly smaller piece with beautiful texture all over it. In crystal lore moldavite is known as the stone of transformation and it has a bit of a reputation for being intense — customers either fall for it instantly or hand it straight back. We have smaller pendants from £199 too, so do ask if you'd like to see the full tray.

10. Moldavite and Clear Quartz Generator Pendant
Why I love it: Something a bit different: raw moldavite set alongside a little clear quartz generator point, so you get the green glass and the sparkle together. A gentler way into moldavite if the big pieces feel like a lot, and it sits beautifully on a chain.
