Blue aventurine gets its shimmer from tiny included mineral flecks catching the light, an effect called aventurescence.
The name comes from the Italian a ventura, "by chance", after an eighteenth century Murano glassmaker spilled copper filings into molten glass by accident.
It is a quartzite, meaning its quartz grains have been fused together by heat and pressure deep in the crust.
