The word "crystal" comes from the Greek "krystallos," meaning ice — the ancient Greeks believed clear quartz was water frozen so deeply it could never melt again.
Clear Quartz owes its transparency to the absence of the trace impurities that colour its relatives — even tiny amounts of iron, manganese or aluminium, combined with natural irradiation, are what turn quartz purple (Amethyst), yellow (Citrine), pink (Rose Quartz) or brown (Smokey Quartz).
 
Known as Schorl, black is by far the most common form of Tourmaline, making up around 95% of what's found in nature. Dutch traders in the 1700s nicknamed it the "ash puller" after discovering that heating it let it attract ash and paper, thanks to its unusual electrical properties.
Its opaque black colour comes from its high iron content — unlike most other Tourmaline colours, which come from trace manganese or lithium instead.
