Cool Facts –

Green tourmaline (verdelite) is coloured by iron and chromium.

Tourmaline crystals are pyroelectric and piezoelectric, producing a charge when heated or squeezed.

Brazil is the main source; Paraíba tourmaline, a neon blue-green from one Brazilian state, is among the most valuable gems on Earth.

Tourmaline becomes electrically charged when warmed, and Dutch traders once used it to pull ash out of their pipes.
