About Hematite  –

 

Hematite is iron oxide, one of the world's most important iron ores, and it polishes to a heavy, mirror-bright steel grey. Yet grind it into powder and it turns blood red – a hint of the iron inside.

 

It forms in many settings, from vast sedimentary banded iron formations to hydrothermal veins and volcanic rocks, and as an alteration product of other iron minerals.

Hematite is incredibly rich in iron - hence its weightier feel. It is often used as a pigment to create the deep red shade Ochre, as some Hematite forms with a reddish hue

 

Red hematite powder coloured some of the oldest known cave art, and iron oxides like hematite are why Mars looks red.
