About Libyan Desert Glass  –

Libyan Desert Glass is a natural, pale yellow silica glass scattered across the Great Sand Sea of western Egypt. Strictly it is not a true tektite but an impact glass, formed around 29 million years ago when intense heat from an impact or airburst melted desert sand.

Scientists think a meteorite impact or an airburst above the desert fused nearly pure quartz sand into glass that was then broken up and wind-sculpted.

Cool Facts  –

Libyan desert glass formed around 29 million years ago from a meteorite impact or airburst in western Egypt, melting the sand into golden glass.

It is found only in a remote strip of the Great Sand Sea on the Egypt–Libya border.

A carved scarab of it sits in the centre of Tutankhamun's pectoral, in the Cairo museum.

The scarab at the centre of a pectoral found in Tutankhamun's tomb is carved from Libyan Desert Glass.
