About Moss Agate  –

Moss Agate is a translucent chalcedony filled with green, moss-like inclusions that look like a tiny garden trapped in stone. Despite its name it usually lacks the banding of true agate.

It forms in cavities in volcanic rocks, where silica-rich water deposits chalcedony around green minerals such as chlorite and hornblende.

Cool Facts  –

The "moss" in moss agate is not plant material but green chlorite and manganese oxide that grew in branching patterns inside the chalcedony.

Strictly speaking it is not a true agate, as it lacks the concentric banding.

Most moss agate comes from India, Brazil and the western USA.

The 'moss' is purely mineral, not plant; it is simply green crystals that happened to grow in branching shapes.
