About Septarian  –

Septarian nodules are rounded concretions of hardened mud whose cracked interiors have filled with golden calcite and sometimes brown aragonite. Cut and polished, they show a striking network of yellow veins against grey-brown stone. The best-known pieces come from Utah and Madagascar.

They formed on ancient sea floors as minerals cemented mud around a core; the nodules later dried and cracked, and the cracks filled with crystallised calcite.

Cool Facts  –

Septarian nodules formed 50–70 million years ago as mud balls around dead sea creatures; the mud shrank and cracked, and the cracks filled with yellow calcite and brown aragonite.

The name comes from the Latin septum, meaning a partition or wall, for the crystal-filled cracks that divide it.

The best pieces come from Utah and Madagascar.

The name comes from the Latin 'septum', a partition, for the dividing walls of crystal inside; New Zealand's famous Moeraki Boulders are giant septarian concretions.
