Bloodstone is the dark green jasper flecked with red, sometimes called heliotrope. We stock tumblestones, palm stones, hearts and bloodstone jewellery, and the red varies from a few specks to heavy spotting.

Bloodstone is a chalcedony: green from chlorite or amphibole inclusions, with the red spots coming from iron oxide. The old name heliotrope comes from a Greek notion that the stone turned the sun red when placed in water. At 7 on the Mohs scale it is hard-wearing and safe in water, which makes it a good everyday stone. Because the spotting is what people choose by, it is worth looking closely at the photographs rather than buying blind. Hand-picked in St Andrews and posted UK-wide.
