    About Bloodstone  –

     

    Bloodstone is dark green chalcedony speckled with spots of red iron oxide, a dramatic pairing that has made it a favourite since antiquity. Polished pieces glow like a forest floor dotted with red berries.

     

    It forms when silica-rich fluids fill cracks and cavities in volcanic rocks, with green chlorite or similar minerals colouring the body and hematite forming the red spots.

    Medieval Christians believed the red spots were drops of Christ's blood, and it was carved into religious scenes.

    The Isle of Rum in Scotland has a Bloodstone Hill, and Stone Age people on the island worked its local bloodstone into tools.
