About Abalone  –

Abalone is the shimmering inner shell of a sea snail, lined with nacre that flashes peacock blues, greens and pinks as it moves in the light. Polished pieces, bowls and pendants show off that swirling iridescence beautifully, and it has been a favourite coastal treasure for thousands of years.

The mollusc builds its shell layer by layer from microscopic plates of aragonite bound with a natural protein, conchiolin; the thin stacked plates bend light to create the rainbow play of colour.

Cool Facts  –

Abalone shell's rainbow shimmer is nacre – layers of calcium carbonate tiles laid down by the sea snail, which diffract light.

Nacre is one of the toughest natural materials known, thousands of times tougher than the plain aragonite it is made of.

In Maori tradition the shell (paua) is used for the eyes of carved figures.

Māori carvers traditionally set pieces of paua shell as the gleaming eyes of carved figures and meeting-house panels.
