About Jade  –

'Jade' is an umbrella name for two different materials: jadeite, a pyroxene rock, and nephrite, a tough mat of amphibole fibres. Both polish to a buttery, cool-to-the-touch lustre and come in greens, creams, lavenders and blacks, which is why jade has been carved and treasured for thousands of years.

Jadeite forms under high pressure and low temperature in subduction zones, while nephrite grows where serpentinite or dolomite is altered by fluids.

Cool Facts  –

'African Jade' is a trade name — it isn't true jade but serpentine (or a similar stone), loved for its soft colour and smooth feel.

Nephrite is tougher than steel – its interlocking fibres made it ideal for Stone Age axes and Maori weapons.

Han dynasty royalty were buried in suits of jade plates stitched with gold thread.

Nephrite is so tough, thanks to its interlocking fibres, that Neolithic peoples in Europe and China shaped it into axe heads that outlasted flint.
