Elite shungite can be over 90% carbon; regular shungite contains much less. Shungite comes almost entirely from one deposit near Lake Onega in Karelia, Russia.
It is about 2 billion years old, and its carbon contains fullerenes – football-shaped molecules that won their discoverers the Nobel Prize in 1996.
