About Black Tourmaline  –

Black tourmaline, known to mineralogists as schorl, forms jet-black, strongly striated crystals with a glossy lustre. Raw sticks and polished tumbles are among the most popular crystals in any shop.

It crystallises in granite pegmatites and some metamorphic rocks, where boron-rich fluids allow long, prismatic crystals to grow.

Cool Facts  –

Black tourmaline (schorl) is pyroelectric: heat it and it develops an electric charge at each end, which is how it got the name "ash-puller" from Dutch traders.

Tourmaline's name comes from the Sinhalese turmali, "mixed-coloured stones".

It grows as long striated prisms, and the striations run the length of the crystal.

Tourmaline becomes electrically charged when heated, and Dutch traders once used it to pull ash out of their pipes, calling it 'aschentrekker'.
