Cool Facts: The Baltic region is home to the largest known deposit of Amber, called Baltic Amber or Succinite. It dates from 44 million years ago (during the Eocene Epoch). It has been estimated that these forests created more than 100,000 tons of amber.
Amber jewellery has traditionally been given to babies and worn during times of growth and change for hundreds of years. Its colour depends on how much oxygen it was exposed to as tree resin hardened over millions of years — less oxygen gives pale lemon tones, more gives deep cognac and cherry shades.
