About Amber  –

Amber is fossilised tree resin, warm to the touch and surprisingly light, glowing in honey, cognac and butterscotch shades. Some pieces even hold tiny insects or plant fragments trapped millions of years ago.

Sticky resin from ancient forests was buried in sediments, where heat and pressure slowly hardened it over millions of years; much Baltic amber washes up on shores after storms.

Cool Facts  –

Amber is fossilised tree resin, not a mineral – most Baltic amber is around 44 million years old.

Rubbed on wool it becomes electrically charged; the Greek word for amber, elektron, gave us the word electricity.

Baltic amber contains succinic acid, and pieces with trapped insects are prized by scientists as well as collectors.

The Greek word for amber, elektron, gave us the word electricity, because rubbed amber picks up static and attracts bits of fluff.
