About Hackmanite  –

Hackmanite is a variety of sodalite with a party trick: it changes colour when exposed to ultraviolet light, then slowly fades back. Some pieces turn from white to raspberry pink, others from pink to colourless, and most glow bright orange under a UV torch.

It forms in silica-poor alkaline igneous rocks, such as nepheline syenites, where sulphur is present.

Cool Facts  –

Hackmanite is a sulphur-bearing sodalite that changes colour in sunlight (tenebrescence) – pink or violet in the sun, fading back in the dark.

It also glows bright orange under UV light.

It was named in 1901 after the Finnish geologist Victor Hackman; today most comes from Afghanistan and Myanmar.

This reversible colour change, called tenebrescence, can be repeated endlessly, and it was named after the Finnish geologist Victor Hackman in 1901.
