Cool Facts:
Iolite is gem-quality cordierite, and its name comes from the Greek ios, violet.
It is strongly pleochroic – violet-blue one way, yellowish-grey another – which is the property Viking navigators are said to have used.
Most iolite comes from India, Sri Lanka and Madagascar.
