About Kambaba  –

Kambaba Jasper is a trade name for a dark green-and-black patterned rock with swirling rings and eye-like spots. Much of it is sold as fossil stromatolite, layered mats built by ancient microbes, though some material appears to be a spherulitic volcanic or sedimentary rock, so the name covers more than one thing.

Where it is stromatolitic, it formed from microbial mats in shallow seas that were later mineralised with silica over hundreds of millions of years.

Cool Facts  –

Kambaba jasper is a stromatolite – fossilised colonies of cyanobacteria (microbes) over 2 billion years old.

Those microbes were among the first life on Earth and created the oxygen in our atmosphere.

It comes from Madagascar and South Africa.

Stromatolites are among the oldest evidence of life on Earth, with some examples dating back around 3.5 billion years.
