About Malachite  –

Malachite is a vivid green copper carbonate famous for its bands and bullseyes in every shade from pale mint to deep forest green. Its polished swirls make it one of the most recognisable stones in the world.

It forms in the weathered upper zones of copper deposits, where copper-bearing water reacts with carbonate rocks and deposits layer upon layer of green.

Cool Facts  –

Malachite's banding records how the copper-rich water that formed it ebbed and flowed over thousands of years.

The ancient Egyptians ground it into the green eye paint worn by Cleopatra.

It should never be soaked or put in water, and it is best handled polished – raw malachite dust is not something to breathe in.

The Malachite Room in the Winter Palace, St Petersburg, uses around two tonnes of Ural malachite in its columns and vases.
