    About Orca Agate  –

     

    Orca Agate is a trade name for a black, grey and white patterned stone from Mexico, whose bold contrasts recall the markings of a killer whale. It is mainly chalcedony, but its composition varies from piece to piece and it is not a classic banded agate.

     

    It formed where silica-rich fluids moved through volcanic rock, filling and replacing it with microcrystalline quartz mixed with darker mineral impurities.

    Orca agate is named for its bold black-and-white patterns, like a killer whale's markings.

     

    It is a recently discovered agate from Madagascar.

     

    The white areas are quartz and chalcedony; the black is manganese and iron oxides.

     

    Real orcas are found around Scotland too, with a tiny resident group known as the West Coast Community, now only two whales, occasionally seen around the Hebrides.
