About Jasper  –

 

Jasper is an opaque, fine-grained form of quartz coloured by iron oxides, clay and other minerals, giving it reds, ochres, greens and endlessly patterned combinations. Hard-wearing and earthy, it is one of the most varied and collectable families in the shop.

 

It forms when silica-rich fluids fill cracks and cavities or replace sediments and volcanic ash, trapping impurities as the silica hardens.

Jasper is opaque chalcedony coloured by up to 20% other minerals, which is why it comes in almost every colour and pattern.

 

Its name comes from the Greek iaspis, meaning spotted stone.

 

Jasper was one of the twelve stones on the breastplate of the high priest in the Old Testament.

 

Jasper appears among the twelve stones on the breastplate of the High Priest described in the Book of Exodus.
