Known in Scotland as "Cairngorm" after the mountains where it's found, Smokey Quartz became especially fashionable in the 1800s when Queen Victoria's love of Highland dress popularised it in kilt pins and brooches.
Its smoky brown colour comes from natural background radiation acting on trace aluminium within the crystal over long periods of geological time.
