    About Unicorn Stone  –

     

    Unicorn Stone is a trade name rather than a mineral name, used for a mottled pink, red and grey rock. Pieces sold under this name are generally a feldspar-rich rock with quartz and darker mineral flecks, but the exact make-up varies between suppliers. It is valued for its cheerful colours and whimsical name.

     

    As a mixed rock it formed through igneous and metamorphic processes that brought feldspar, quartz and other minerals together in one stone.

    Unicorn stone is a rock of lilac lepidolite, pink tourmaline, smokey quartz and cleavelandite, found in Madagascar.

     

    It is also sold as "pegmatite", which is the type of rock it is – a coarse-grained granite.

     

    Because it is a rock rather than a mineral, every piece has a different mix of colours.

     

    Unicorns appear on the royal coat of arms of Scotland, where the unicorn has been the national animal since the 1300s.
