About Azurite  –

Azurite is a copper carbonate with an extraordinary deep, velvety blue, often forming glittering crystals, spheres called 'blueberries' or crusts mixed with green malachite. It is one of the most intensely coloured minerals on Earth.

It forms in the oxidised upper zones of copper deposits, where carbon dioxide-rich water reacts with copper ores; over time it often alters into malachite.

Cool Facts  –

Azurite is a copper carbonate that slowly turns into malachite as it weathers – many pieces show both.

It was ground into the blue pigment used in medieval European paintings before ultramarine became affordable.

Its name comes from the Persian lazhward, meaning blue, the same root as "azure".

Ground azurite was one of the main blue pigments in medieval European art, and some old skies that were once azure have since turned green as it altered to malachite.
