    About Charoite  –

     

    Charoite is a swirling lilac to deep violet stone with a silky, chatoyant sheen, often laced with black aegirine and orange tinaksite. Its marbled purple patterns look almost like brushstrokes.

     

    It forms where alkaline magma intruded limestone, creating unusual metamorphic rocks; the only known deposit is at the Murun Massif in Siberia.

    Charoite is found in only one place on Earth – along the Chara river in Siberia, Russia.

     

    It was only described as a mineral in 1978, though locals had known the purple rock for decades.

     

    Its swirling fibrous pattern is unlike any other stone, and its chemistry is so complex the formula runs to over 30 characters.

     

    It was only officially described in 1978 and is named after the Chara River in Siberia, near its sole known deposit.
