Charoite is found in only one place on Earth – the Murun Massif in Yakutia, Siberia.
It was only officially described in 1978, and is named after the nearby Chara River.
Its swirling violet patterns come from tangled, fibrous crystals that give it a silky, chatoyant sheen.
