Ethiopian opal was only discovered in commercial quantities in 2008, in the Wollo province, and is now the second biggest source after Australia.
Much of it is hydrophane – it soaks up water, temporarily turning clear, and dries back to its full colour.
Its play of colour comes from tiny silica spheres that diffract light like a prism.
