    About Goldstone  –

     

    Goldstone is a man-made glass, not a natural stone, glittering with countless tiny copper crystals. The classic reddish-brown version is joined by blue and green goldstones, which use other metals to colour the glass.

     

    It is made in a furnace by melting glass with copper and controlling the cooling so that metallic copper crystallises in the melt.

    Goldstone is not a natural stone but a glass with copper crystals suspended in it, first made in 17th-century Venice.

     

    Legend says monks made it by accident when copper filings fell into molten glass – hence its Italian name avventurina, "by chance".

     

    Blue goldstone is the same glass coloured with cobalt.

     

    A popular story says it was discovered by Italian monks, but historical records credit a 17th-century Venetian glass-making family, the Miotti.
