About Lapis Lazuli  –

Lapis lazuli is a deep royal-blue rock made mostly of lazurite, often speckled with golden pyrite and streaks of white calcite. Prized since ancient times, it has decorated tombs, crowns and great works of art.

It forms by contact metamorphism, where limestone or marble is altered by hot, mineral-rich fluids near intrusions of magma.

Cool Facts  –

Lapis lazuli is a rock, not a single mineral: deep blue lazurite, white calcite and flecks of golden pyrite.

Ground into powder it became ultramarine, the most expensive pigment of the Renaissance, reserved for the Virgin Mary's robes.

The finest lapis has been mined in the Sar-e-Sang valley of Afghanistan for over 6,000 years.

For centuries it was ground into ultramarine, the pigment Renaissance artists reserved for the Virgin Mary's robes because it cost more than gold.
