About Leopard Skin Jasper –

Leopardskin Jasper is not a true jasper but a rhyolite, a volcanic rock, patterned with rings and spots like a big cat's coat. Its colours range from cream and tan to pink, brown and black.

It forms from silica-rich lava, where round clusters of tiny radiating crystals (spherulites) grow as the volcanic glass cools and changes.

Leopardskin jasper is actually a rhyolite – a volcanic rock – not a true jasper.

Its spots are spherical clusters of feldspar and quartz that grew as the lava cooled.

Most comes from Mexico.

The round spots are spherulites: bundles of needle-like crystals that grew outwards from a single point as the volcanic glass slowly crystallised.
