    About Orpiment  –

     

    Orpiment is a bright golden-yellow to orange arsenic sulfide, often with a pearly shine on its flaky surfaces. It is very soft and bends in thin sheets.

     

    It forms at low temperatures in hot-spring deposits and hydrothermal veins, often next to its red cousin realgar.

    Orpiment is arsenic sulphide – its name comes from the Latin auripigmentum, gold pigment, because it was ground into the paint "king's yellow".

     

    It contains arsenic, so it is a display piece only: keep it in its box and wash your hands after touching it.

     

    The finest crystals come from Hunan, China and Peru.

     

    Its name comes from the Latin 'auripigmentum', meaning gold paint, and it was used for centuries as a yellow pigment called King's Yellow.
