    About Prasiolite  –

     

    Prasiolite is a pale leek-green quartz. Natural green quartz is rare, and almost all Prasiolite on the market is amethyst that has been heat-treated (or sometimes irradiated) to turn it green, so we are happy to be clear about that.

     

    Suitable amethyst, notably from the Montezuma area of Brazil, turns green when heated; small amounts of naturally green quartz have been found in Poland and elsewhere where volcanic heat did the same job.

    Prasiolite is green quartz – most of it is amethyst that has been gently heated, which turns the purple to a soft leek-green.

     

    Its name comes from the Greek prason, meaning leek.

     

    Natural green quartz is very rare; small amounts have been found in Brazil, Poland and Canada.

     

    The name comes from the Greek for 'leek' and 'stone', a nod to its vegetable-green colour.
