About Sardonyx –

Sardonyx is banded chalcedony that combines layers of reddish-brown sard with white or black onyx bands. Its crisp stripes made it the classic stone for carved cameos and signet rings.

It forms in cavities in volcanic rock, where silica-rich waters deposit alternating layers of microcrystalline quartz, some tinted by iron oxides.

Cool Facts –

Sardonyx is onyx with red-brown sard bands, named for Sardis in ancient Lydia.

It was one of the twelve stones on the high priest's breastplate in the Bible.

Its layers make it ideal for cameos and seals, which the Romans carved by the thousand.

Romans favoured it for seal rings because hot sealing wax would not stick to it, leaving a crisp impression every time.
