About Azurite and Malachite –

Azurite & Malachite is a natural mix of two copper minerals: deep blue azurite and banded green malachite. The two colours swirl together in the same piece.

Both form where copper ore deposits are weathered by water and air near the surface, and azurite slowly turns into malachite over time.

Azurite and malachite are both copper carbonates, and azurite slowly turns into malachite as it weathers – so the two are very often found growing together.

Both were ground into pigments: azurite for medieval blues, malachite for Egyptian eye paint.

Most specimens come from copper mines in Morocco, Namibia and Arizona.

Ground azurite was used for centuries as a blue pigment in European paintings.
