    About Magnetite  –

     

    Magnetite is a heavy, black iron oxide and the most magnetic naturally occurring mineral. It forms neat octahedral crystals, and naturally magnetised pieces, known as lodestone, will pick up pins and paper clips.

     

    It occurs in igneous and metamorphic rocks worldwide, and concentrates in black sands where heavier grains settle out in rivers and beaches.

    Magnetite is the most magnetic natural mineral; naturally magnetised pieces (lodestone) were used in the first compasses.

     

    The ancient Greeks named it after the region of Magnesia, giving us the word "magnet".

     

    Tiny magnetite crystals in the beaks of birds may help them navigate.

     

    Lodestones were used in China's earliest compasses, spoon-shaped 'south-pointers' described around two thousand years ago, long before compasses were used at sea.
