Blue John is a rare banded fluorite found only in Castleton, Derbyshire. It shows bands of purple-blue, cream and yellow.

It formed when mineral-rich fluids moved through cracks in limestone, depositing fluorite in layers.

Cool Facts –

Blue John is a banded purple-and-yellow fluorite found in only two hills at Castleton in Derbyshire, England.

The name is thought to come from the French bleu-jaune, blue-yellow.

It has been mined for ornaments since the 1700s, and the Romans may have collected it too.

Only a small amount is mined each year, mostly by hand in the Blue John Cavern and Treak Cliff Cavern.
