Cool Facts:
Carborundum is silicon carbide, made in a furnace from sand and carbon – it is not a natural mineral.
It was invented in 1891 by Edward Acheson while trying to make artificial diamonds, and it is almost as hard.
Natural silicon carbide (moissanite) does exist, but only in tiny amounts, in meteorites and some deep-earth rocks.
