About Agate –
Agate is a banded form of chalcedony, the finely grained cousin of quartz, and no two pieces are ever alike. Its layered bands, eyes and landscapes come in every earthy colour, and Scotland has some of the most prized agates in the world, collected from beaches and old volcanic hills.
Silica-rich fluids seep into gas bubbles and cavities in volcanic rock and deposit chalcedony layer by layer over long periods, recording each change in chemistry as a new band.
