    About Purpurite  –

Purpurite is a manganese phosphate in intense royal purple, often with a satiny sheen and dark streaks. It is one of the few minerals whose name simply means 'purple'.

It forms when lithium-manganese phosphates such as lithiophilite in granite pegmatites are altered near the surface, losing lithium and oxidising the manganese.

    Cool Facts  –

Purpurite is a manganese phosphate that starts life as lithiophilite and turns purple as it weathers.

Its name simply comes from the Latin purpura, purple.

The finest specimens come from Namibia.

It forms a series with heterosite, with the two minerals differing mainly in how much iron replaces manganese.
