    About Carnelian  –

     

    Carnelian is a warm orange to red chalcedony coloured by iron oxides, glowing like embers when held to the light. It has been worn and carved for thousands of years and remains a favourite for its cheerful, fiery colour.

     

    It forms in cavities and veins within volcanic rock, where silica-rich fluids deposit chalcedony and traces of iron give it colour.

    Carnelian is chalcedony coloured orange to red by iron oxide.

     

    Ancient Egyptians called it the "setting sun" and buried it with the dead for protection in the afterlife.

     

    Its name comes from the Latin cornum, the cornelian cherry, for its colour.

     

    Romans prized it for signet rings because hot sealing wax does not stick to carnelian, making crisp impressions.
