About Calcite  –

Calcite is one of the most abundant minerals on Earth and comes in a huge range of colours and forms, from glowing orange chunks and honey rhombs to crystal-clear Iceland spar. Its soft, waxy glow and bright colours make it a great-value stone for any collection.

It forms in almost every geological setting: limestone and marble are made mostly of calcite, and fine crystals grow in caves, hydrothermal veins and cavities in volcanic rock.

Cool Facts  –

Calcite is calcium carbonate – the same mineral as chalk, marble and seashells, and one of the most common on Earth.

It is the standard for hardness 3 on the Mohs scale, so it can be scratched with a copper coin.

Clear calcite shows double refraction: look through it and you see two images.

Clear Iceland spar splits light in two, showing a double image, and some historians think Viking sailors may have used it to find the sun through cloud.
