About Howlite  –

Howlite is a calcium borosilicate that forms chalky white nodules laced with grey or black veins like a marble. It is porous and takes dye easily, so it is widely coloured blue and sold as imitation turquoise – natural howlite is always white to grey.

It forms in evaporite deposits where boron-rich waters evaporate, growing as nodules within clay and gypsum beds.

Cool Facts  –

Howlite was discovered in Nova Scotia in 1868 by Henry How, a Canadian chemist.

Because it is porous and takes dye well, it is often dyed blue and sold as imitation turquoise – ours is natural white.

Its grey veins are the mineral's own cracks filled with other minerals.

It is named after Henry How, a Nova Scotia chemist who described it in 1868 after quarry workers found the odd white nodules in gypsum.
