     About Selenite & Satin Spar

Selenite and Satin Spar are both varieties within the gypsum crystal family and are often referred to interchangeably in the crystal trade. However, they are not technically the same stone.

True Selenite is rarer and typically appears clear or transparent. Satin Spar, on the other hand, is more opaque, fibrous in appearance, and far more commonly available. Most items such as bowls, wands, and decorative pieces are made from Satin Spar.

To avoid confusion for customers, we use the term Selenite/Satin Spar to describe the Satin Spar material widely sold as “Selenite.” When referring to genuine Selenite, we will clearly label it as True Selenite.

About Selenite (Satin Spar)  –

Satin spar is a fibrous form of gypsum, made of countless fine parallel crystals. It has a silky, moonlit glow and a band of light that glides along it as you turn it. Almost all the wands, towers, bowls and charging plates sold as 'selenite', including ours, are satin spar.

It forms when gypsum crystallises as tightly packed fibres in cracks and veins, often in clay and mudstone left behind by evaporating salty water.

Cool Facts  –

Most "selenite" wands and towers are actually satin spar, the fibrous form of gypsum; true selenite forms clear glassy crystals.

Its name comes from Selene, the Greek moon goddess, for its soft glow.

The largest crystals on Earth are gypsum: the Cave of Crystals in Naica, Mexico, has beams 11 metres long.

The glowing line of light that moves along satin spar is called chatoyancy, the same effect you see in tiger's eye.
