    About Serpentine  –

     

    Serpentine is a group of magnesium silicate minerals, usually olive green to yellow-green and often with darker mottling. Its smooth, waxy look means it is sometimes sold as 'Olive Jade' or 'New Jade', though it is not true jade.

     

    It forms when iron- and magnesium-rich rocks from deep in the Earth are altered by hot water, a process called serpentinisation.

    Serpentine is named for its scaly, snakeskin-like surface, and is the state rock of California.

     

    It forms when ocean-floor rocks react with seawater, so it often marks where ancient oceans closed.

     

    Serpentine is also found in Scotland, in Shetland and at Portsoy in Aberdeenshire, and was used in decorative stonework.

     

    Serpentine was named the official state rock of California in 1965.
