    About Volcano Agate  –

     

    Volcano Agate is a trade name for chalcedony and quartz that formed in volcanic rock; the data here are for agate. It is best known for glowing bright green under UV light.

     

    It formed when silica-rich water filled gas holes and cracks in volcanic rock and set as layers of chalcedony and quartz.

    Volcano agate forms inside cavities in volcanic rock, as silica-rich water seeps in and sets layer by layer.

     

    Agate forms over millions of years, which is why every piece has its own banding.

     

    Scotland is famous for its agates – the beaches and fields of Fife and Angus have been searched for "Scotch pebbles" for centuries.

     

    The green glow under UV comes from tiny traces of uranium held in the chalcedony, far too little to be a concern.
