    About Amazonite  –

     

    Amazonite is a blue-green variety of the feldspar microcline, often with fine white streaks and a soft satin gleam. Its fresh sea-glass colour makes it a lovely stone for beads, tumbles and palm stones.

     

    It grows in granite pegmatites; traces of lead and structural water within the crystal lattice, altered by natural irradiation, give it that distinctive colour.

    Amazonite's blue-green comes from tiny amounts of lead and water in the feldspar.

     

    Despite the name, it is not found in the Amazon – early explorers confused it with green stones from the river.

     

    Amazonite beads were found in Tutankhamun's tomb, and it was carved into scarabs in ancient Egypt.

     

    Despite its name, there are no known amazonite deposits along the Amazon River; the stone was probably confused with other green minerals from the region.
