About Desert Rose –

A desert rose is a cluster of flat, bladed gypsum crystals (occasionally baryte) that fan out like petals, with desert sand trapped inside giving them a sandy colour. Each one looks like a flower sculpted from the desert itself.

They grow in arid, sandy basins as evaporating groundwater leaves gypsum or baryte behind, the crystals enclosing sand grains as they form.

Desert roses are gypsum (or sometimes barite) crystals that grew in shallow desert sand, trapping grains between their petals.

They form when mineral-rich water evaporates in arid ground, over decades to centuries.

Most come from Morocco, Tunisia and Mexico.

The baryte version, known as 'rose rock', is so plentiful around Norman, Oklahoma that it was made the state's official rock in 1968.
