Garnet's name comes from the Latin "granatum," meaning pomegranate, after its resemblance to pomegranate seeds — it's been used in jewellery for over 5,000 years, with pieces found in Egyptian pharaohs' tombs.
While deep red is most familiar, Garnet actually comes in almost every colour except blue — the variation comes from differing amounts of iron, magnesium, manganese and chromium within its crystal structure.
