About Merlinite –
Merlinite is a trade name for white chalcedony, quartz or opal with black manganese-oxide inclusions, often in branching, fern-like dendrites. The strong black-and-white contrast makes each piece look like an ink drawing.
It forms when silica-rich solutions harden in cavities and fractures, while manganese minerals creep through cracks and crystallise as dark dendrites.

Cool Facts –
Merlinite is a trade name for dendritic chalcedony (sometimes dendritic opal) – the black branches are manganese and iron oxides that crystallised in tree-like patterns, not fossils.
The name was coined after Merlin of Arthurian legend for the stone's association with magic.
Most Merlinite comes from New Mexico in the USA.
Dendrites look like fossil plants, but they are purely mineral growths of manganese oxide.
