About Garnet  –

Garnet is a family of closely related silicate minerals rather than a single stone, ranging from wine-red almandine and pyrope to green tsavorite and orange spessartine. Its rounded, many-faced crystals and rich colours have made it a jewellery favourite for thousands of years.

Most garnets form in metamorphic rocks such as schist and gneiss under high pressure and temperature, with some growing in igneous rocks and pegmatites.

Cool Facts  –

Garnet is not one mineral but a family of them, all sharing the same cubic crystal structure and differing only in which metals sit inside it.

The name comes from the Latin granatum, pomegranate, after the colour and shape of the seeds.

Garnet crystals grow as near-perfect twelve-sided rhombic dodecahedra, one of the few minerals that routinely forms its own geometry without help.

Garnets wash up on the beach at Elie in Fife, just along the coast from St Andrews, where the local pyropes have been known as 'Elie rubies' for generations.
